Welcome to The River Parish Council web site. On these pages you will find information and news about the village of River in the County of Kent.
There has been much concern recently about the lack of water in Bushy Ruff and Russell Gardens as well as the low level from Kearsney Abbey downstream. In answer to enquiries made we have had the following response from Ian McAthy Asset Manager for Infrastructure of Veolia Water Southeast The lack of water in the river, Bushy Ruff and Russell Gardens at this time is down to a lack of rainfall and the operation of the natural underground aquifer rather than any impact of our abstractions. Our total demand for water from our customers has reduced significantly over recent years following our metering programme and the promotion of water efficiency. This means the total abstracted from the aquifer is now far less than it was ten years ago. Our pattern of abstraction from our various sources has changed in recent times following modifications to our licences by the EA and we now abstract a larger proportion of the water required, from further down the aquifer now than we did historically and this should assist the levels in the Bushey Ruff area. What we are seeing currently is therefore the natural decline of the aquifer that occurs to different degrees every year that will hopefully change through the winter period as steady rainfall recharges the aquifer back up to more normal levels.
